Seven Hospitals Aim to Expand Specialist Care

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the construction of seven major hospitals in Nawaz Sharif Medical City, a flagship health project expected to add 1,519 beds and several specialised facilities. The decision was taken during a special meeting on public-private partnership projects, where officials reviewed 110 proposed development schemes across Punjab.

The approval places medical infrastructure at the centre of the province’s development agenda. Rather than adding only general wards, the plan focuses on specialist institutions that can serve patients with complex needs. This is important for Punjab because many families still travel from district hospitals to large urban centres for advanced treatment, especially in surgery, eye care, infectious diseases and blood-related illnesses.

Why it matters: The project is not just about more beds. Its main value will come from specialist departments, trained staff and timely access for serious patients.

What the Medical City Will Include

According to officials, the medical city will include a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Center, an Institute of Genetic and Blood Diseases, a Center of Excellence for Nursing and Midwifery, an Infectious Diseases Hospital and an Institute of Ophthalmology. The chief minister also approved Children’s Hospital-IV and the Institute of Surgical Orthopedics, widening the scope of the plan for paediatric and surgical care.

The phased model means the full medical city may not become operational at once. However, it gives the government room to sequence construction, staffing, equipment purchase and service launch. This approach can reduce the risk of buildings being completed without doctors, nurses, machines or operating budgets. For patients, the real test will be how quickly each phase moves from approval to functional services.

Facility / component Main focus Patient impact
Seven major hospitals 1,519 planned beds More capacity for public healthcare
Children’s Hospital-IV Paediatric treatment Better access for child patients
Surgical Orthopedics Institute Bone, joint and rehabilitation care Specialist surgery support
Genetic and Blood Diseases Institute Inherited and blood disorders Advanced diagnosis and treatment
Infectious Diseases Hospital Contagious disease care Stronger outbreak response
Nursing and Midwifery Center Training and workforce skills Improved patient care quality

PPP Review Shows Wider Development Push

The healthcare approvals came as part of a broader review of public-private partnership projects. Officials also discussed student hostels, road infrastructure, trucking terminals, bus stands, model bazaars and food street projects. They informed the meeting that four PPP projects are already operational, while feasibility studies for 27 additional projects have been completed.

Other schemes discussed included an FMD production plant in the Medical District, a Time Travel Park in Lahore, a shrimp farming project and a Mines-to-Metals project in Chiniot. The mix of projects shows that the Punjab government is using the PPP platform not only for hospitals, but also for transport, urban services, agriculture, tourism and industrial development.

Policy watch: PPP projects can speed up delivery, but their success depends on transparent contracts, clear timelines, public affordability and strong monitoring.

Delivery, Staffing and Access Will Decide Success

Maryam Nawaz said the provincial government would continue its development agenda and expand collaboration with the private sector to accelerate economic growth and improve public services. For the medical city, the next stage will require detailed execution: land use, tendering, civil works, equipment procurement, hiring, training and recurring health budgets.

The approval is a strong first step, but hospital projects succeed only when they are planned around patients. Punjab will need to ensure that the new facilities are not limited to buildings and signboards. The province will need specialists, nurses, technicians, infection control systems, diagnostic labs, referral pathways and affordable access for low- and middle-income families.

If delivered properly, Nawaz Sharif Medical City could reduce pressure on existing tertiary hospitals in Lahore and give Punjab a larger network for specialised treatment. The 1,519-bed target is significant, but the public impact will depend on how fast the hospitals become operational, how well they are staffed and whether patients can receive quality care without long delays.

Bottom line: The project can become a major healthcare upgrade for Punjab, but citizens will judge it by working hospitals, available doctors and affordable treatment.
