Insta360 Enters a Tough Pocket Camera Fight
Insta360 has launched Luna Ultra as its first dedicated pocket gimbal camera, moving beyond the 360-degree camera category where the brand is already well known. The product is designed for creators who want stabilized footage, strong image quality, and flexible framing without carrying a full mirrorless camera kit.
The device is co-engineered with Leica and competes directly with DJI’s Osmo Pocket line. Luna Ultra tries to stand out with dual lenses, 8K video, Leica colour profiles, a detachable screen, and higher-end creator features in a compact body.
| Why it matters: Pocket gimbal cameras are becoming serious creator tools, not just casual vlogging devices. Insta360 is using Luna Ultra to target users who want professional-looking footage without a heavy camera setup. |
Dual Leica Cameras Lead the Hardware Push
The main camera uses a 1-inch 8K sensor paired with a Leica Summicron lens and an f/1.8 aperture. This setup is designed to capture more light and provide cleaner detail than many smaller action-camera sensors. Insta360 also claims up to 14 stops of dynamic range, which should help preserve detail in bright and shadowed areas.
The second camera uses a 1/1.3-inch telephoto sensor with an f/2.0 aperture. It supports up to 6x lossless zoom and up to 12x digital zoom, giving creators more reach for events, travel shots, product videos, and distant subjects.
Leica’s role is also visible in the camera’s colour system. Luna Ultra ships with Leica Natural, Leica Vivid, and Leica Chrome profiles, giving users ready-made looks for different shooting styles. For creators who prefer editing later, the camera also supports 10-bit I-Log for a more flexible post-production workflow.
Video, Screen, and Stabilization Features
Luna Ultra can record 8K video at 30 frames per second and 4K video at up to 120 frames per second. It also supports Dolby Vision and slow-motion capture at lower resolutions.
Its most unusual feature is the detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen. When attached, it works as the main display and control surface. When detached, it becomes a wireless remote monitor and controller with HD transmission up to 20 meters. That gives solo creators more freedom to frame shots from a distance or shoot from unusual angles.
The camera uses a 3-axis gimbal system combined with electronic stabilization. Insta360 has also included Deep Track 5.0, which supports subject tracking, group tracking, smart framing, and zoom-based tracking. These features are meant to keep people and moving subjects properly framed while the creator focuses on the scene.

Higher Price Raises Expectations
At $769.99, Luna Ultra is not a budget creator camera. Its price is higher than mainstream pocket gimbal options, which means buyers will expect better image quality, reliable focusing, strong battery performance, and an easier workflow. Early hands-on coverage has praised the detachable screen and zoom flexibility, while also noting that usability and focus performance will need close testing against DJI’s mature alternatives.
For Insta360, the challenge is not only hardware. The company must convince creators that Luna Ultra is easy enough for daily use while still powerful enough to justify its premium price.
| Buyer note: The headline specs are strong, but buyers should wait for detailed reviews if focus reliability, heat performance, battery life, and low-light quality are critical to their workflow. |
A New Option for Solo Creators
The Luna Ultra looks especially useful for solo creators who often shoot without a camera operator. The detachable screen can help users monitor themselves from across a room, while the telephoto camera can capture tighter shots without physically moving closer to the subject. Built-in storage, microSD expansion, a four-microphone system, and wind protection also make the device more complete for field shooting.
The launch shows how pocket gimbal cameras are moving into a more advanced stage. The category is no longer only about simple stabilized clips. It is now moving toward multi-lens systems, higher resolutions, wireless monitoring, AI tracking, better audio, and professional colour workflows. Luna Ultra is Insta360’s strongest attempt yet to compete in that space.
