Anthropic has crossed a threshold it spent months preparing for. On June 9, 2026, the company launched Claude Fable 5 — the first Mythos-class AI model made available to the general public — alongside Claude Mythos 5 for a smaller group of vetted partners. Mythos-class models sit above the Opus line in capability and had previously been restricted to trusted organisations through Project Glasswing.

Fable 5 and the Safeguard System
Fable 5 uses the same underlying model as Mythos 5 but includes a conservative safeguard layer designed for broad public deployment. When the system detects requests touching on cybersecurity, biology, chemistry, or model distillation, the response is automatically handled by Claude Opus 4.8 instead of Fable 5. Users are notified when this rerouting occurs.
Anthropic acknowledges the safeguards are intentionally cautious and will block some legitimate requests. The fallback triggers in under 5% of sessions on average. Refused requests return a refusal stop reason as a standard HTTP 200 and are not billed if no output is generated.

Anthropic says Fable 5 leads on most tested AI benchmarks, with independent reporting placing it at roughly 80% on SWE-Bench Pro for software engineering. In a real-world example, Anthropic said Stripe used Fable 5 to complete a codebase-wide migration across a 50-million-line Ruby codebase in a single day — work the company estimated would have taken a team of engineers more than two months to complete manually.
In life sciences, Anthropic’s protein design experts used Mythos 5 to accelerate parts of the drug design process by approximately ten times. Mythos 5 also produced molecular biology hypotheses that scientists preferred over Opus-class outputs in roughly 80% of blinded comparisons.

Anthropic is introducing a 30-day data retention policy for Fable 5, Mythos 5, and future models of comparable or greater capability. The company says this data will not be used to train new Claude models or for non-safety purposes. The policy is designed to help detect jailbreaks, complex misuse attempts, and false positives. GitHub Copilot administrators can configure this policy — it is off by default. |
Pricing and Access Window
Both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 are priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens — less than half the per-token cost of the Claude Mythos Preview that preceded them. Fable 5 is fully available through the Claude API (model ID: claude-fable-5) and on consumption-based Enterprise plans from today. It is also available on Amazon Bedrock.
For subscription users on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans, Fable 5 is included at no extra cost through June 22. From June 23, usage credits will be required. Anthropic may extend the included window if capacity allows, and intends to restore Fable 5 as a standard subscription model as quickly as infrastructure permits.
