⚡  QUICK TAKEAWAYS
•       Siri AI is a complete rebuild powered by next-generation Apple Intelligence, not a software update to the existing assistant.
•       Personal context understanding lets users search across Messages, Mail, Photos, and third-party apps using natural language.
•       Visual Intelligence expands from iPhone to iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro for the first time, with a brand-new Camera mode on iPhone.
•       Integrated Writing Tools allow users to draft, edit, and proofread text virtually anywhere they type, including most third-party apps.
•       EU users on iOS and iPadOS will not receive Siri AI initially; China availability also delayed pending regulatory approvals.

Apple has torn down and rebuilt Siri from the ground up. Unveiled at WWDC 2025 as Siri AI, the new assistant is not a patch on the old one — it is an entirely different product, powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence, designed to understand the full context of a user’s digital life and take meaningful action across apps, devices, and the web. For years, Siri lagged behind rivals in conversational depth and real-world utility. That chapter, Apple insists, is now over.

What Siri AI Actually Does Differently

The fundamental limitation of the old Siri was its inability to connect dots. Ask it to find a hotel confirmation from last week’s email, and it would draw a blank. Siri AI changes this with personal context understanding — a system-level capability that searches across Messages, Mail, Photos, and Notes using natural language queries, and can extend to third-party apps through Spotlight when developers opt in.

Onscreen awareness adds another dimension. If a user is reading a text about a dinner party and wants to brainstorm what to bring, they can invoke Siri mid-conversation and it will understand the context without being told what to look at. The assistant can also draft a note, compose an email, or take a systemwide action — all without leaving the app.

Broad world knowledge rounds out the trio. When a user wants to know when a band is coming to their city or needs real-time weather for a trip, Siri AI queries the web and generates a synthesised answer, much like a search engine with a conversational layer on top.

🔒 PRIVACY ARCHITECTURE

Siri AI uses a bold new architecture that separates on-device processing from server-side computation. Sensitive personal data is handled on the device. When Private Cloud Compute is invoked, Apple states that user data is neither stored nor accessible to Apple or third parties — and that this commitment can be independently verified by external auditors at any time.

Visual Intelligence Goes Cross-Platform

Visual Intelligence, previously available only on iPhone 15 Pro and 16 models, now reaches iPad and Mac for the first time. On iPad it integrates directly into the screenshot experience, allowing users to ask questions about anything they capture. On Mac, a dedicated keyboard shortcut lets users select any element on screen and type a query directly to Siri.

Apple Vision Pro gains spatial Visual Intelligence, allowing users to ask about app window content and physical objects simply by looking at them and beginning to speak. On iPhone, the Camera app now includes a dedicated Siri mode — users tap the shutter button to let Siri see through the lens, enabling practical actions such as splitting a bill via Apple Cash, identifying food and estimating nutritional content, and recognising objects in real time.

A New Architecture Built to Scale

Siri AI runs on a two-layer compute model. For routine and privacy-sensitive tasks, Apple’s most advanced on-device model processes requests entirely on the device, keeping data local. For tasks requiring deeper reasoning or real-time web access, the assistant routes to Private Cloud Compute — servers running Apple Silicon that Apple says can be verified by independent security researchers.

The system uses an orchestrator layer that taps into the Spotlight index, App Toolbox, and system APIs, all operating on-device. This architecture also underpins the improved dictation system, which now handles capitalisation, punctuation, and formatting automatically as users speak — a feature Apple is pitching as a wholesale replacement for manual text correction.

Writing Tools Embedded System-Wide

Perhaps the most practically transformative addition is Siri’s integrated Writing Tools. Users can describe what they need — a draft email to a colleague, a reply to a client, an outline for a document — and Siri generates it. If the draft needs refining, users can describe the change they want and Siri updates it accordingly.

In Mail and Messages, the system goes further: it learns how a user typically communicates with specific contacts — tone, punctuation style, level of formality — and mirrors that in generated drafts. Automatic proofreading runs silently in the background across the system, including inside most third-party applications, flagging errors as users type.

💬  CONVERSATION CONTINUITY

The Siri app uses iCloud to privately sync conversation history across all of a user’s Apple devices. A thread started on Mac can be continued on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Apple Vision Pro. Apple says this sync is private by design and does not expose conversation content to Apple servers.

Device and Regional Availability

Siri AI requires Apple Intelligence-capable hardware: iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, M1-or-later iPad and Mac models, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch Series 9 or later. The features are entering developer beta now across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and visionOS 27, with watchOS support following in a future beta.

The rollout carries notable geographic caveats. Apple has confirmed that EU users on iOS and iPadOS will not receive Siri AI initially, citing the company’s ongoing efforts to find a path forward that preserves user privacy and security under European regulatory requirements. macOS and other platforms remain available in the EU. China availability is on hold while Apple works through local regulatory requirements.

Region iOS / iPadOS macOS / Other Notes
US, UK, Canada, Australia ✓ Beta 2025 ✓ Beta 2025 Full feature set
European Union ✗ Delayed ✓ Available iOS/iPadOS excluded initially
China ✗ Pending ✗ Pending Regulatory review ongoing
Other regions Phased rollout Phased rollout Additional language support expanding

💰  PRICING NOTE

Apple has not announced pricing changes tied to Siri AI. The features are part of Apple Intelligence, which is included at no additional cost on supported devices running iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27.

The Bigger Picture

Siri AI is Apple’s clearest statement yet that it intends to compete directly in the AI assistant race that Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have been running for years. The architecture is distinctive: rather than routing everything to the cloud, Apple has built a system that prioritises on-device processing and positions privacy as a product differentiator rather than a compliance footnote.

Whether Siri AI delivers on its ambitions in practice will depend on execution. Apple has set a high bar with the feature list. The beta period beginning for developers now will be the first real test of whether the rebuilt assistant can hold up to daily use across the full range of tasks Apple demonstrated at WWDC. A public beta is expected later in 2025.
