PTA Pushes Telecom Operators to Improve Transparency
Mobile users in Pakistan can now check active value added subscriptions more easily through simple USSD codes introduced for major cellular networks. The facility is aimed at helping customers review services attached to their SIMs and remove any unwanted subscriptions that may be consuming balance or data without regular notice.
The move follows directions from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to cellular mobile operators to make information about Value Added Services, commonly known as VAS, easier for subscribers to access. These services may include entertainment alerts, caller tunes, information packages, games, lifestyle updates, data add-ons or other paid mobile features.
Many users only discover these subscriptions when their mobile balance falls unexpectedly or their data bundle finishes earlier than expected. By offering one simple code for each operator, the regulator wants customers to have a clearer way to see what is active on their number and take action without visiting a franchise or calling a helpline.
USSD Codes for Jazz, Zong, Telenor and Ufone Users
Under the new consumer facilitation measure, Jazz and Zong customers can dial *6611# to view and manage active VAS subscriptions. Telenor users can dial *4444#, while Ufone subscribers can dial *6869# for the same purpose.
These codes allow users to access subscription details directly from their phones. The process is designed for ordinary mobile users and does not require a smartphone, mobile app or internet connection. This is important for customers in smaller cities, rural areas and low-connectivity regions where app-based account management may not always be convenient.
Jazz users also have the option to manage VAS through SIMOSA, where they can check available services and opt in or opt out of selected subscriptions. However, the USSD code remains useful for people who want a quick method on any mobile phone.
Why Hidden Subscriptions Matter for Mobile Customers
Hidden or forgotten subscriptions have long been a common complaint among prepaid mobile users. A customer may activate a service once and later forget about it, while another may not clearly understand that a trial or promotional offer will convert into a paid subscription. In some cases, small daily or weekly deductions can continue for weeks before the user notices the loss.
For low-income users, even small deductions matter. Many people purchase limited balance or small data bundles for calls, WhatsApp, online classes, ride-hailing, work messages or mobile banking. Unwanted VAS charges can reduce the value of these packages and create frustration for customers who are already managing tight telecom budgets.
The issue is also linked to consumer trust. When users feel they do not have control over services attached to their SIM, they become less confident in digital and telecom services. A simple checking mechanism gives subscribers more control and makes operators more accountable for the services being charged.
How Users Can Protect Their Balance and Data
Mobile customers should regularly dial the relevant code for their operator and review all active subscriptions. Any service that is no longer needed should be deactivated immediately. Users should also read confirmation messages carefully before accepting promotional offers, especially those offering free trials, entertainment content or daily alerts.
Parents and families should check the SIMs used by children, elderly relatives or household staff, as they may not always understand paid subscription messages. Businesses that provide SIMs to employees should also monitor extra services because small charges across many numbers can become a larger monthly cost.
If a customer continues to face unwanted deductions after deactivating a service, they should contact the mobile operator first and keep screenshots or SMS records where possible. If the issue is not resolved, they can approach PTA through its complaint channels for further support.
The new USSD codes are a practical step toward better consumer protection in Pakistan’s telecom sector. They will not remove the need for careful mobile usage, but they can help users quickly identify paid services, stop unnecessary charges and keep better control over their balance and mobile data.
