Why the Tiggo 9 PHEV matters in Pakistan

Chery Tiggo 9 PHEV enters the market at a time when Pakistani drivers are under pressure from high fuel costs, uncertain fuel availability, and the daily need for more efficient mobility. That context makes plug-in hybrid vehicles more relevant than before because they offer a practical middle path between full petrol models and fully electric cars.

The Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid is positioned as a solution for users who want to reduce fuel spending without giving up the freedom to travel long distances. With a claimed combined range of up to 1,400 kilometres and a pure electric range of up to 170 kilometres, it is aimed at drivers who need both city efficiency and intercity flexibility.

For many urban users, that electric-only range could cover routine commuting for two to three days without using petrol. At the same time, the petrol-backed range removes the charging anxiety that still limits the adoption of fully electric vehicles in Pakistan, where charging infrastructure is growing but remains incomplete.

How plug-in hybrid technology changes daily driving

The main strength of a plug-in hybrid is that it combines electric driving with the security of an engine for longer journeys. Conventional petrol vehicles remain completely fuel-dependent, while standard hybrids offer only limited electric support and still rely heavily on fuel. Fully electric vehicles can be highly efficient, but many buyers still worry about charging access, long-route planning, and downtime.

That is where the Tiggo 9 PHEV tries to stand out. It allows meaningful electric driving for daily use while keeping a petrol-powered backup for extended trips. This gives drivers more control over running costs without forcing a major lifestyle adjustment.

In practical terms, the vehicle is designed for people who want lower operating costs in the city but still expect an SUV to handle family travel, out-of-town movement, and changing road conditions. That balance is what makes the plug-in hybrid category increasingly attractive in markets like Pakistan.

Powertrain, battery, and performance highlights

Chery says the Tiggo 9 PHEV combines a dedicated hybrid engine, a triple-motor system, and a 34.46kWh battery pack. The vehicle is built around the company’s Chery Super Hybrid system, which is presented as a dedicated electrified platform rather than a simple adaptation of a conventional petrol setup.

The company claims a combined output of 610 horsepower and 920Nm of torque, figures that place the SUV in a very strong performance position for its class. Chery also highlights a thermal efficiency of 44.5%, which it says helps the system make better use of fuel while still delivering strong acceleration and smooth response.

For buyers, these numbers matter because they suggest the Tiggo 9 PHEV is not being sold only as an efficiency-focused SUV. It is being positioned as a premium electrified model that also delivers power, refinement, and long-distance usability without major trade-offs.

Cabin comfort, safety, and market positioning

Inside, the Tiggo 9 PHEV leans strongly into premium presentation. Chery says 78.9% of the cabin surfaces are soft-wrapped, while the dashboard includes a 15.6-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Door-mounted seat controls and a European-inspired cabin theme are meant to reinforce the upscale feel.

Comfort equipment includes heated and ventilated seats, front-seat massage functionality, a 14-speaker Sony sound system, and a three-row layout designed to support family use. The Cloud Chassis suspension system is also highlighted as a feature that can adapt to different road conditions in real time, which is important for local driving environments where surface quality can vary sharply.

On safety, the SUV is presented with a 5-star safety rating, 10 airbags, and Level 2+ driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping support, collision monitoring, and automated parking. In Pakistan, it is being introduced by Master Auto Engineering at an ex-factory price of PKR 13.694 million, with a booking amount of PKR 3 million. With 10 existing 3S dealerships and plans to expand to 20 by 2027, the launch also reflects Chery Master Pakistan’s wider growth ambitions in the country.
