Colonial-Era Railway Station to Be Preserved and Renovated

The historic Lodhran Railway Station, a colonial-era junction on the Lahore–Karachi main line, is set to be preserved and renovated after years of neglect. Officials say the move aims to protect the station’s heritage value while improving basic facilities for thousands of passengers who use it every year.

Historic Importance of Lodhran Railway Station

Lodhran Railway Station has played a strategic role in the subcontinent’s rail network since before the Partition of 1947. Located on the Lahore–Karachi main track, it served as a key junction linking rural populations to major cities. Historically, passengers from surrounding areas used Lodhran to travel toward Lahore via Vehari and Mailsi and toward Karachi through Rohri and Hyderabad.

The station continues to hold operational importance for Pakistan Railways today. It is the only junction from where a double railway track extends all the way to Karachi, supporting both express passenger trains and heavy freight movement. Goods transported from Karachi Port to upcountry destinations rely heavily on this section, making Lodhran a critical link in national trade and travel corridors.

Years of Neglect and Deteriorating Facilities

Despite its significance, Lodhran Railway Station has suffered from years of underinvestment and poor maintenance. Officials acknowledge that the building is in weak condition, with many basic passenger facilities either missing or badly damaged. Ageing walls, worn-out waiting areas and limited seating reflect the long-standing neglect of the structure.

During a recent inspection, Lodhran Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ashraf reviewed the state of the station and its surroundings. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Liaquat Gilani, Station Master Iqbal Malik and officers from the district building department briefed him on the current condition and historical value of the site. They noted that while some limited repair work had already been carried out using district administration funds, a comprehensive renovation plan was still needed.

Preservation and Renovation Plan

Following the visit, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ashraf announced that the colonial-era station building will be preserved and renovated rather than replaced. The decision reflects a growing recognition of the need to protect historic public infrastructure while adapting it to modern requirements. The district administration has committed to allocating its own funds to support the preservation effort.

The deputy commissioner issued immediate directions for installing LED lights in passenger lounges to improve visibility and comfort, particularly for travellers using the station during evening and night hours. He also ordered the installation of CCTV cameras at key points inside and outside the station to enhance security for passengers, staff and railway property.

Upgrading Passenger Facilities and Security

Officials say the renovation plan will focus on improving basic amenities such as clean waiting halls, better lighting, safe platforms and clearer signage. Restoration work is expected to pay attention to the building’s original architectural features so that its colonial-era character is preserved even as modern conveniences are added.

The installation of CCTV cameras is aimed at deterring theft, vandalism and other security incidents. Combined with brighter LED lighting, the surveillance system should make it easier for law-enforcement and railway security staff to monitor movement around the station. This is particularly important at a busy junction where passengers board and disembark from both express and freight-linked trains.

Protecting Rail Heritage While Supporting Connectivity

Heritage advocates have long argued that Pakistan’s older railway stations are an important part of the country’s architectural and social history. By deciding to preserve Lodhran Railway Station instead of simply rebuilding it, the district administration is signalling that historic value and passenger comfort can be pursued together.

Once renovation work is completed, passengers travelling between Lahore, Karachi and southern Punjab could benefit from a cleaner, safer and more welcoming facility without losing the station’s historic charm. For local residents, the project offers the hope that a long-neglected landmark will be restored to its rightful place as a functioning, well-maintained part of the community’s daily life.
