France Makes Online Visa Appointments Mandatory From Feb 20, 2026

What Changed and Who the New Rule Applies To

France has introduced a mandatory online visa appointment system for travelers applying for French visas worldwide. From February 20, 2026, applicants can no longer book visa appointments through walk-ins, phone calls, emails, or other informal methods. The rule applies to both short-stay Schengen visas and long-stay national visas.

For applicants, this is mainly a workflow change. France has not announced that eligibility rules have changed. But if you try old booking methods, you will likely be blocked because the appointment request must start online and move through the official steps.

This matters most in high-demand markets where “slot brokers” sell appointment times. France is trying to ensure appointments are requested through a single, traceable channel and reduce manipulation of limited slots.

Why France Introduced Online-Only Booking

The change is meant to address common pain points: crowded counters, long queues, and the growing broker market that profits from scarcity. When applicants cannot find slots, some pay unofficial agents to “arrange” dates. That creates unfair access and encourages misuse of the system.

An online-only process helps standardize booking, build a digital trail, and reduce counter pressure. It also allows France to manage demand more predictably by filtering incomplete requests earlier and reducing no-shows through a confirmation step.

For applicants, the key shift is that accuracy matters earlier. If your online request looks inconsistent or incomplete, it can be rejected before you ever reach the in-person stage.

Step-by-Step: How the New Booking Process Works

France’s updated process follows a clear sequence:

1) Start on France-Visas
Use the Visa Wizard on the France-Visas website to confirm whether you need a visa and identify the correct visa category (short-stay Schengen or long-stay national, and purpose such as tourism, business, study, or family).

2) Request the appointment on Démarches Simplifiées
After the Visa Wizard step, you are directed to the French government’s Démarches Simplifiées platform. You must complete a questionnaire covering:
• Purpose of travel
• Intended length of stay
• Expected departure date

3) Be accurate to avoid early rejection
Authorities stress that incomplete or inconsistent answers can lead to rejection at this stage. Your details should be realistic and match what you can later prove with documents.

4) Confirm the proposed slot by email
If your request is approved, you receive an email proposing a date and time. The appointment is not confirmed automatically. You must reply within the stated timeframe, otherwise the slot may be canceled and released to other applicants. This is intended to reduce unused slots during peak seasons.

In-Person Appointment Still Required: Documents, Fees, Biometrics

Even with online booking, applicants must still attend an in-person appointment at a French consulate or visa application center. At the appointment, you submit supporting documents, pay the required visa fees, and provide biometric data such as fingerprints and a photograph.

Some applicants may be exempt from giving fingerprints again if they provided them in the past 59 months for a previous Schengen application. However, the final decision is made by the officer reviewing your case, so you should be prepared to provide biometrics if asked.

Because the online stage now acts as a gate, the in-person visit becomes more time-sensitive. Missing documents or mismatched information compared to your online questionnaire can waste the appointment and delay your plan.

Practical Tips to Avoid Slot Loss and Common Mistakes

To reduce risk under the new system:

• Use only official channels and avoid anyone promising “guaranteed appointments.”
• Fill the questionnaire carefully—your dates and purpose should match your documents.
• Check email (and spam/junk) regularly after submitting the request.
• Reply to the proposed appointment within the deadline to lock the slot.
• Prepare documents early so you can attend without last-minute gaps.
• If you think you are exempt from fingerprints, still be ready in case the officer requires biometrics again.

The main takeaway is simple: France is pushing visa booking into a standardized, traceable online flow to reduce queues and broker activity. If you follow the steps carefully and confirm promptly, you should avoid most avoidable delays.
