Rather surprisingly, from December, the Consulate General of Germany in Karachi will suspend its services to non-EU nationals with respect to security concerns. On security grounds, the measure by the German Consulate, has tied many a person in Pakistan along with other international travelers to the country, with some even still confused for their future plans and visa application processes.

 Security Concerns to Suspend Services

The information came in from the consulate via its official Twitter account, declaring the temporary closure of its services for non-EU nationals. “Due to imminent security concerns, the Consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany will remain closed for services of non-EU citizens until further notice reads the statement.”.

While the specific security concerns that have made the consulate take this step have not been spelt out, it has no doubt left many confused and anxious who were dependent on the services of the embassy.

Impact of this development on visa applicants/travelers

This is going to affect many people, tourists, businesspersons, and students alike. Hundreds of Pakistanis who were applying for German visas or were facing their processing are now left in the lurch.

The consulate, however, has assured individuals that are already issued visas may still go ahead and pick their documents. “Non-EU nationals whose visas have already been processed, the consulate assured, can still pick them up,” the statement said.

Uncertain Timeline for Resumption of Services

The German Consulate has not indicated any probable timeline as to when it might start offering the services for non-EU citizens again. The embassy warned applicants and other interested parties to always stay alert and never trust anything other than their official information regarding resuming their services.

Potential Implications and Concerns

The temporary suspension of services in the German Consulate in Karachi has engendered concerns about its aftermath on various sectors, especially tourism, business, and education. Conclusion

This no doubt has caused inconvenience and uncertainty to a large number of people, in particular, for affected applicants following the German Consulate’s decision to suspend its services for non-EU citizens. While it further assesses the situation, clear and transparent communication would be essential on their part to address the public’s concerns and ameliorate inconvenience to as many people and businesses as possible.
