Google has launched its most capable translation model yet, and it works in real time. Gemini 3.5 Live Translate performs continuous speech-to-speech translation across more than 70 languages — detecting the language automatically, preserving the speaker’s voice characteristics, and staying just a few seconds behind the live speaker. It is rolling out immediately across Google Translate, the Gemini developer API, and Google Meet.

How It Works
Unlike conventional translation systems that wait for a speaker to finish a sentence before processing it, Gemini 3.5 Live Translate generates translated speech continuously as audio streams in. This removes the staggered pause that characterises traditional turn-by-turn translation and replaces it with a near-continuous output that stays only a few seconds behind the original speaker. The model handles multilingual inputs automatically — no manual language selection required — and is built to function in noisy, real-world environments.

Google Meet Gets a Major Upgrade
For enterprise customers, the most consequential change is in Google Meet. The previous speech translation feature supported only five languages and could only translate to or from English. With Gemini 3.5 Live Translate, Meet now supports 70+ languages and over 2,000 language pairings in a single meeting. A call between a Mandarin, Spanish, and Swedish speaker no longer needs English as a relay language. Google is launching this in private preview for select Workspace business customers this month, with broader availability to follow later in 2026.
| 📱 NEW: ANDROID LISTENING MODE
Android users in the Google Translate app can now access a listening mode that streams translated audio directly through the phone’s earpiece — no headphones needed. Hold the phone to your ear as you would for a call and hear a real-time translation of whatever is being said around you. This is particularly useful in quick conversational moments where connecting headphones is not practical. |
SynthID Watermarking
All audio output from Gemini 3.5 Live Translate is watermarked using Google’s SynthID technology. The watermark is imperceptible to the human ear but detectable by Google’s systems, enabling AI-generated audio to be identified even after being shared or edited. Google positions this as a misinformation safeguard — ensuring that translated audio cannot be passed off as an authentic original recording.
