Government Announces Relief Measures For Electricity Consumers

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a relief package of Rs 50 billion for domestic consumers of electricity who use up to 200 units per month. This relief, given increased rates of electricity, aims to provide some respite to the common man.

PM Collaboration

The coalition administration is dedicated to working together to overcome all obstacles. Addressing Pakistan’s economic problems, he said that combating corruption is essential since there is no other practical method to deal with them. According to the PM, the subsidy would benefit 25 million consumers during the three months of July, August and September, constituting 94 per cent of total domestic users.

Electricity to Cost Rs4-Rs7 per Unit

The cost of electricity under the relief package would be in the range of Rs4 to Rs7 per unit. This will be a massive relief in terms of financial burden for the respective domestic consumers.

K-Electric Consumers Included

Prime Minister was told that Power utility K-Electric consumers would also be entitled to the same subsidy.

Funding from the Development Budget

he Prime Minister announced that the funds for this Rs50 billion relief initiative would be drawn from the development budget.

Alleviating Burden on Households

The Prime Minister said that though the summer months were difficult months for households on account of higher consumption of electricity, the consumption is usually lower from October when the temperatures are lower.

Commitment to Tackle Challenges

He vowed to the public that the coalition government would fight all the challenges together. The PM said that corruption could be fought and addressed at every level; this was the only way to fight this evil and find a resolution to the economic woes of Pakistan.

Wide Reforms in the Energy Sector

Apart from the announcement of a subsidy, the Prime Minister talked about larger reforms in the energy sector. He said the government is doing everything possible to reform the energy sector and ensure a viable and efficient power supply to the country.

Conclusion

The Rs50 billion electricity subsidy announced by PM Shehbaz Sharif is major relief to the 25 million domestic consumers, hit hard by upward revision in electricity prices. It shows that the government is serious towards standing with the common man when it fixes a cost of Rs4-Rs7 per unit.
