The much-anticipated opening of the Gujranwala Motorway Link Road has encountered yet another setback, further delaying the connectivity and convenience it promised to bring to the region. The project, initially slated for completion by December 25th, 2023, has faced a series of challenges, pushing back its inauguration once again.

Prior to its closure on January 20, the two-lane connector road connecting Gujranwala with the Lahore-Sialkot Motorway was scheduled to open for traffic. Nevertheless, authorities have failed to meet yet another deadline for finishing the project.

According to Caretaker Punjab CM Mohsin Naqvi, over 85% of the road’s construction has been completed thus far. He gave the go-ahead to officials to move quickly and declared January 31 as the new, provisional launch date.

Details About Gujranwala Motorway

The Gujranwala Motorway Link Road project aimed to enhance transportation infrastructure, ease traffic congestion, and promote economic development in the region. Connecting key areas and facilitating smoother travel, the road was expected to become a vital link for commuters and businesses alike.

In addition, the CM flew over the entire highway from Benazir Chowk to Wahando to assess it from above. Colonel Imran later gave the CM an update on the building progress at a meeting at the FWO’s camp office.

It was informed to him that 80% of the construction work on the road from Benazir Chowk to Wahndo Interchange and 57% of the work on the 15.2 km approach road had been finished.

It is important to note that after the project is finished, the trip time between Gujranwala and Lahore will be less than 45 minutes.

Additionally, CM Naqvi went to the Lahore flyover project at Akbar Chowk. He declared that by the middle of November, cars will be able to pass over the flyovers.

Naqvi announced that traffic on the Gujranwala Motorway connection route will start on January 31. Furthermore, he issued an order to expedite the project’s work.

When the project opens to traffic, Mohsin Naqvi claims that it will only take 45 minutes to travel between Gujranwala and Lahore.

The caretaker CM received an update on the condition of the route from the employees of the Frontier Works Organization (FWO). An estimated Rs. 11 billion will need to be spent on the project.

Reasons for Delay

Several factors have contributed to the repeated delays in opening the Gujranwala Motorway Link Road. Issues such as land acquisition complications, unforeseen technical challenges, and adverse weather conditions have hindered the construction progress. These setbacks have frustrated both residents and businesses eagerly awaiting the road’s completion.

The prolonged delay in opening the Gujranwala Motorway Link Road has had repercussions on the local community. Commuters continue to face difficulties in their daily travels, relying on alternative routes that are often congested and time-consuming. Businesses that were anticipating improved accessibility and increased customer traffic are now grappling with continued uncertainty.

Government Response

Government officials have acknowledged the challenges faced by the project and have reiterated their commitment to its successful completion. Measures are being taken to expedite the remaining construction phases, and additional resources are being allocated to address the outstanding issues. Regular updates from relevant authorities are expected to keep the public informed about the progress being made.

Community Expectation

Despite the setbacks, residents and businesses in the Gujranwala region remain hopeful for the swift resolution of the issues causing the delays. The completion of the Gujranwala Motorway Link Road is seen as crucial for unlocking the area’s economic potential and providing a significant boost to overall connectivity.
