Farhan’s record run makes him Pakistan’s lone nominee

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the shortlist for the Player of the Tournament award at the T20 World Cup 2026, and Sahibzada Farhan is the only Pakistani player to make the cut. Pakistan’s overall campaign did not go to plan, with the former champions failing to progress beyond the group stage, but Farhan’s numbers stood out across the tournament.

The opening batter scored 383 runs in six innings, the highest total ever recorded in a single Men’s T20 World Cup edition. He also became the first player to hit two centuries in one tournament, reaching triple figures against Sri Lanka and Namibia. Even when Pakistan struggled with net run-rate calculations and qualification scenarios, Farhan’s output remained consistent and explosive at the top of the order.

How Pakistan’s top order performed despite early exit

Pakistan did not make the semi-finals, but Farhan’s performances helped keep the team competitive in matches where quick starts were essential. Along with Fakhar Zaman, he repeatedly provided aggressive powerplay scoring, giving Pakistan a platform even when the middle overs did not always deliver the same momentum.

Farhan’s case is also about adaptability. Modern T20 cricket demands fast scoring without losing shape, and the technically strong right-hander showed he can adjust his approach based on the situation. Big totals, chasing pressure, and different bowling plans are all part of elite T20 tournaments, and Farhan’s ability to deliver across six innings is why he has earned this nomination despite Pakistan’s disappointing overall results.

Other leading contenders: Will Jacks and Sanju Samson

England all-rounder Will Jacks is another headline contender after playing a major role in England’s run to the semi-finals. He collected four Player of the Match awards, scored 226 runs at a strike rate of 176.56, and added nine wickets. Those are strong all-round numbers in a tournament where impact moments decide knockout places.

India’s Sanju Samson also completes the shortlist, with match-winning performances in the business end of the competition. He struck an unbeaten 97 off 50 balls against West Indies in the Super Eight stage and followed it with a rapid 89 off 42 in the semi-final. Knockout contributions often carry extra weight in award discussions because the pressure is higher and the consequences are immediate.

South Africa and New Zealand nominees highlight balance

South Africa’s Lungi Ngidi has been shortlisted after leading the Proteas’ pace attack with 12 wickets in seven matches. In tournaments like the T20 World Cup, a fast bowler’s value is often measured by taking wickets at key moments and controlling the scoring rate in tough phases. Ngidi’s consistent spells were a major factor in South Africa reaching the semi-finals.

His teammate Aiden Markram is also nominated after delivering influential batting performances, especially after being promoted to the top of the order. Markram scored three half-centuries in eight matches, with two standout unbeaten 86s in successful chases against New Zealand and West Indies.

New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra has impressed as a multi-skill player, scoring 128 runs and taking 11 wickets, including a decisive 4 for 27 against Sri Lanka in the Super Eight stage. Wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert is also on the list after scoring 274 runs in eight matches, including a key 58 in the semi-final against South Africa in a chase of 170.

What happens next and why the award matters

Despite the United States exiting in the group stage, pacer Shadley van Schalkwyk earned a place on the shortlist with a striking return of 13 wickets in four matches and an economy rate of 6.80. His nomination shows that the award is not only about team progress; it can also reward standout individual impact.

The ICC’s Player of the Tournament winner will be announced after the final between England and India on Sunday. For Farhan, the nomination itself is significant. It signals that his T20 World Cup 2026 performances were among the tournament’s defining stories, and it gives Pakistan a positive headline in a campaign that otherwise ended earlier than fans expected. If he wins, it would be a rare case of a Player of the Tournament coming from a team that did not reach the knockouts, which underlines how exceptional his record-breaking run has been.
