What Murree Police Announced for Eid Tourists

Murree Police have issued a travel advisory and finalized security and traffic arrangements ahead of Eid ul Fitr, as authorities expect a large number of tourists to visit the hill station.

District Police Officer (DPO) Murree Dr Muhammad Raza Tanveer said an estimated 400,000 to 500,000 tourists are expected during the Eid holidays. With this type of footfall, traffic management becomes the main challenge because roads, parking capacity, and narrow routes can get overwhelmed quickly.

The police message is focused on prevention: travel planning, controlled vehicle entry, and quick access to emergency support. Tourists are being advised to follow traffic rules, cooperate with traffic wardens, and use official channels if they face an emergency.

For families, the most important takeaway is to plan your timing, keep your vehicle in good condition, and avoid taking risks on crowded mountain roads, especially when weather conditions worsen.

Vehicle Entry Data and the Court-Prescribed Daily Limit

To explain why restrictions matter, the DPO shared last year’s entry numbers. Police recorded 28,688 vehicles entering Murree on the first day of Eid last year, followed by 51,380, 57,855, and 35,119 vehicles over the next three days.

These volumes are far above the court-prescribed daily limit of 8,000 vehicles. Authorities say the limit can increase to around 12,000 during peak days, but even that “peak allowance” is still much lower than the traffic Murree saw during the last Eid period.

This gap between the legal cap and real traffic is why Murree regularly experiences gridlock. When vehicles exceed capacity, movement slows to a crawl, emergency access becomes difficult, and minor incidents can block entire routes. It also increases the risk of accidents and vehicle overheating, especially when traffic remains stuck for long periods.

For tourists, the practical point is that entry controls may be stricter this Eid. If the limit is reached, police can restrict further entry, leaving late arrivals stuck on approach roads. If you must travel, start early in the day and keep flexibility to change plans.

Traffic Plan and the Safe Tourism Murree App

Police say they have prepared a traffic management plan to handle the expected rush. While the full route plan is not detailed in the advisory, the usual focus is on controlling entry flow, managing parking, and keeping key corridors open for emergency movement.

A major part of the guidance is the ‘Safe Tourism Murree’ mobile application. The DPO advised tourists to download it before travelling because it provides access to emergency services, including Police, Rescue 1122, Traffic Police, and Motorway Police.

The app is described as more than a helpline. It includes a virtual women police station, direct contact with the DPO through WhatsApp, and information about hotels, tourist spots, and weather updates. For visitors, this can save time because you can reach the right service without searching for numbers during a crisis.

Police also remind tourists that emergency assistance is available through helpline 15, and that using official channels is safer than relying on informal contacts during crowded holiday periods.

Weather Warning and Practical Safety Tips for Eid Travel

The DPO referred to the weather forecast and said rain and thunderstorms are expected in Murree during Eid. Wet roads, fog, and sudden visibility changes are common in hill stations during storms, so careful driving becomes essential.

If you plan to travel, leave early, avoid late-night driving, and maintain a lower speed on turns and steep slopes. Keep extra distance from other vehicles because braking distance increases on wet roads. Do not overtake on blind turns.

Before leaving, check tyres, brakes, wipers, headlights, and coolant levels. Carry warm clothing, water, a charged power bank, and basic medicines. If you are traveling with children, keep snacks and blankets available, because long delays in traffic are common when entry volumes spike.

Most importantly, cooperate with traffic diversions and parking instructions. Illegal parking on narrow roads is one of the biggest causes of gridlock in Murree. If police restrict entry after the vehicle cap is reached, consider postponing travel, shifting to a less busy day, or staying outside the most congested zones.

For emergencies, use helpline 15 or the Safe Tourism Murree app to contact the relevant service quickly.
