Govt Sets Timeline for 5G and Spectrum Auction

Pakistan has taken a major step toward launching 5G services, with the government announcing plans to auction around 600 megahertz of spectrum in the coming months. In a joint press conference, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima confirmed that the auction framework has been cleared at the policy level and that the full process is expected to be completed within the next four to six months. The authorities are working with a target to hold the auction either in the last week of January 2026 or the first week of February 2026, subject to cabinet approvals and completion of stakeholder consultations. This is being positioned as a key milestone under the government’s Digital Pakistan agenda.

ECC and Spectrum Advisory Committee Approvals

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb confirmed that the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved the recommendations of the Spectrum Advisory Committee, which had been tasked with outlining the overall design of the 5G auction. These recommendations cover the amount of spectrum to be offered, reserve pricing, payment terms and technical conditions for operators. IT Minister Shaza Fatima added that these recommendations will now be placed before the federal cabinet for final approval. Once the cabinet signs off, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and the relevant ministries will be able to issue formal auction documents, invite bids from mobile network operators and move toward execution. The coordination between the ECC, IT Ministry and finance authorities is being highlighted as a sign that the government wants a smooth, market-friendly process that still safeguards public revenue.

Why 5G and More Spectrum Matter for Pakistan

Shaza Fatima stressed that reliable, high-speed internet is the backbone of any modern digital system. In Pakistan’s case, demand for mobile data has grown sharply due to online education, e-commerce, fintech, remote work and everyday social media use. However, many areas still face issues with speed, coverage and network congestion. By releasing additional spectrum and moving toward 5G, the government aims to improve both the quality and reach of mobile broadband services. 5G technology can support faster download and upload speeds, lower latency and more connections per tower, which is essential for new use cases like smart cities, advanced manufacturing, telemedicine and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. For ordinary users, it can translate into more stable video calls, quicker streaming and smoother app performance, especially in dense urban centres.

Consultations With Telecom Operators and Stakeholders

The IT minister underlined that the government intends to keep the process consultative and transparent. She said that discussions with mobile network operators and other stakeholders will be a core part of the next phase, as the industry needs clarity on pricing, rollout obligations, licence terms and technology-neutral frameworks. Telecom companies have repeatedly asked for a balanced approach in spectrum pricing, arguing that very high upfront fees can limit their ability to invest in networks, towers and fibre infrastructure. Through the Spectrum Advisory Committee, the government has tried to factor in both the state’s revenue needs and the financial health of the sector. The outcome of these consultations will play a big role in determining how quickly 5G can be rolled out across major cities and then gradually extended to smaller towns.

Digital Pakistan Vision and Next Steps

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb reiterated that moving forward with the 5G spectrum auction is part of a broader push to modernise Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. Under the Digital Pakistan initiative, the government wants to expand broadband coverage, promote e-governance, support startups and deepen the role of technology in the economy. Faster and more reliable connectivity is central to all of these goals. Once the cabinet approves the Spectrum Advisory Committee’s recommendations and the auction documents are finalised, the focus will shift to execution. If the timeline is met and operators respond positively, Pakistan could see early 5G launches in selected urban centres within the next year. For consumers and businesses alike, this would mark an important shift toward a more connected, competitive and digitally enabled future.
