June 10, 2024Zayn0

Remittances from Pakistanis residing overseas increased by 54% year over year (YoY) to $3.2 billion in May 2024 from inflows of $2.1 billion reported in the same period the previous year, according to remittance data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Friday. The number of remittances received in a single month has never been greater. Remittances increased from $2.8 billion in April 2024 to that amount by 15% month over month.

Seasonal Factors

Seasonality was blamed for the spike in inflows, with Pakistanis living overseas sending their families larger-than-usual amounts of money ahead of Eid ul Azha. Most ex-pats from Pakistan who live in non-Muslim countries fulfill their religious obligations by giving up something in Pakistan.

Geographical Divide

When the numbers are broken down, $819 million from Saudi Arabia represents the greatest inflows. With $668 million, $473 million, and $340 million, respectively, the United States (US), the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United Kingdom (UK), and the European Union (EU) ranked second and third.

Year-to-Date Performance

From Year-to-Date Performance payments increased by 7.7 per cent year over year to $27.1 billion for the July–May quarter of the fiscal year 2023–24 (11MFY24) from $25.1 billion during the same period the previous year.

Importance of Remittances

Remittances are an important source of income for many people in Pakistan and make up a sizeable portion of the nation’s foreign exchange reserves. The increase in remittances is indicative of the diaspora’s sustained support for Pakistan, but it also emphasizes the significance of laws and programs designed to facilitate and promote the inflow of foreign workers’ wages into the nation.

Possibilities and Challenges

Even if the record-breaking remittance inflows are a good thing, Pakistan still has to deal with persistent economic issues like growing living expenses, high inflation, and the need for sustainable economic growth. To solve these issues and provide chances for increased investment, the creation of jobs, and general economic stability, the government and legislators must try to take advantage of this remittance growth.

In Summary

The increase in remittance inflows to Pakistan is a noteworthy accomplishment and evidence of the diaspora’s ongoing support for the nation. To take advantage of this chance, the government must put in place comprehensive plans that will allow these remittances to fully realize their potential and propel Pakistan’s economy toward sustainable growth and development.
