Sukkur Barrage Shut for Annual Renovation and Cleaning

Pakistan’s largest irrigation system, the Sukkur Barrage on the Indus River, has been closed for 15 days to allow for annual renovation and maintenance. From 6 to 20 January, all seven off-taking canals will halt water flow as authorities open the barrage gates for cleaning, repairs and painting.

The temporary closure is part of a planned shutdown that takes place during the low-flow winter season. Engineers and technical teams use this window to clear silt, remove debris and repair structures that bear the heavy load of water throughout the year. Officials say this routine maintenance is essential to keep the nearly century-old barrage operating safely and efficiently.

Sindh Barrages Improvement Project to Replace 27 Gates

Under the Sindh Barrages Improvement Project (SBIP), the provincial government has accelerated efforts to modernise and secure the Sukkur Barrage. Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro has confirmed that 27 gates will be replaced this year as part of the ongoing rehabilitation drive.

He explained that replacing ageing gates is critical for managing water flows, preventing leakages and reducing the risk of structural failure during high-flow periods. The minister added that the plan also includes geophysical investigations of the barrage floor, dredging upstream to manage sediment build-up and the construction of a coffer dam from Gate 15 to 22 to create safe working conditions for engineers.

Rehabilitation to Extend Barrage Life by Three Decades

Minister Jam Khan Shoro has stated that the current rehabilitation programme will extend the operational life of the Sukkur Barrage by about 30 years. He noted that replacement work on 19 gates is scheduled to start this month, following the successful replacement of 16 gates last year under earlier phases of SBIP.

In total, 55 gates of the barrage and its off-taking canals are planned to be upgraded in the coming years. This phased approach allows engineers to keep the barrage functional for most of the year while still carrying out major structural improvements during short shutdowns. The goal is to safeguard the barrage against future damage and to ensure more reliable water distribution to downstream users.

Backbone of Sindh’s Irrigation and Agriculture

Inaugurated in 1932 by British Viceroy Lord Wellington, the Sukkur Barrage is widely regarded as the backbone of Sindh’s irrigation network. It supports nearly 80 percent of the province’s agriculture by diverting Indus River water into a vast canal system that irrigates millions of acres of farmland.

The seven off-taking canals linked to the barrage include the Dadu Canal, Rice Canal and North Western Canal (Kirthar) on the right bank. On the left bank, the system feeds the Khairpur Feeder West, Rohri Canal, Khairpur Feeder East and the Nara Canal. Together, these canals supply water to key crop-growing regions, supporting livelihoods in rural communities and contributing to Sindh’s share of national food production.

Short-Term Disruption for Long-Term Water Security

While the 15-day closure will temporarily disrupt water supplies to parts of Sindh, irrigation authorities have urged farmers and local administrations to see the shutdown as a necessary investment in long-term water security. Advance notices are typically issued so that growers can adjust sowing, irrigation and water storage plans around the maintenance schedule.

Officials stress that without regular rehabilitation and structural upgrades, the risk of breakdowns or uncontrolled flows would be far greater, threatening crops, infrastructure and communities downstream. By strengthening Sukkur Barrage through projects like SBIP, the government aims to protect a critical piece of Pakistan’s irrigation infrastructure and ensure that it continues to serve future generations of farmers.
