Perplexity’s New ‘Computer’: Always-On Multi‑Agent AI

What Perplexity Computer Is Designed to Do

Perplexity has introduced a new feature called Computer for its Perplexity Max subscribers. Instead of asking a chatbot one question at a time, users can now give Computer a larger goal, such as planning a digital marketing campaign or building an Android app for research. The system then works in the background by breaking this big goal into smaller steps.

Perplexity describes Computer as a system that can create and execute full workflows. These workflows can run for a long time, from a few hours to many weeks or even months, depending on how complex the task is. The idea is to move from single responses to long-running projects that AI agents can manage with minimal human supervision.

How the Multi‑Agent, Multi‑Model System Works

Computer relies on a coordinated network of different AI agents, each designed to focus on a specific type of work. When a user sets a goal, the system breaks it into subtasks and assigns them to these agents. Each agent then chooses the best model for its part of the job instead of using one model for everything.

For deep reasoning, Computer uses Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6 as its main engine. For long and detailed search or recall, it can rely on ChatGPT 5.2. Google’s Gemini is used for research-heavy tasks that need careful reading, while Nano Banana generates images and Veo 3.1 is responsible for video production. Grok is used when speed matters for smaller, lightweight tasks.

This best-model-for-the-task approach is different from tools that depend on a single provider, such as Claude Cowork, which runs mainly on Anthropic’s own models. Perplexity is betting that mixing models from several companies inside one system will give users better results for complex, multi-step work.

Cloud Workspaces With Real Tools and File Access

Under the hood, each task in Computer runs inside an isolated cloud environment. Perplexity says these environments act like real workspaces with access to a filesystem, a real web browser and built-in tools. This means agents can browse the web, read and write files and connect to other services as part of their workflow.

This approach aims to make it easier to automate what power users were already doing manually. Many advanced users today link several AI models together and use protocols like the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to give them access to local files and apps. Perplexity Computer takes a different technical route but wants to achieve the same goal: coordinated AI agents that can work across a user’s files, services and applications without the user having to glue everything together.

Building on Earlier Multi‑Agent Experiments

The idea behind Computer is not completely new. Earlier projects such as OpenClaw also explored how to manage and coordinate multiple AI agents. What Perplexity is doing now is packaging this kind of orchestration into a single, user-facing product that lives entirely in the cloud.

By offering Computer as a managed service, Perplexity wants to lower the barrier for people who are not engineers but still need complex automation. Instead of writing custom scripts or running their own servers, users can define their target outcome in simple language and let Computer handle the planning, agent assignments and long-running execution.

If the system proves reliable over long time periods, it could change how startups, researchers and even larger companies approach recurring workflows, from content pipelines and research projects to basic software prototypes.

What This Means for Power Users and Teams

For power users, Computer promises a way to formalise workflows that previously required a mix of tools, plugins and manual supervision. Tasks like ongoing market research, content production, multi-channel marketing or repeated data analysis could be handed off to AI agents that know which model to use for each part.

For teams, especially in digital marketing, software development and research, Computer could act as a shared automation layer. Different members of a team can define projects, review progress and adjust goals, while the agents keep working in the background. As with any long-running AI system, however, organisations will still need to think carefully about data privacy, security and quality control.

Perplexity’s launch of Computer shows how quickly AI tools are moving beyond simple chatbots. The focus is shifting towards agents and systems that can manage ongoing work, coordinate multiple models and stay active for long periods — all with the aim of turning natural language instructions into real, repeatable workflows.
