Petrol and Diesel Prices Raised After Iran Strikes

Government Announces Fresh Fuel Price Hike

The federal government has announced another increase in petrol and diesel prices, putting additional pressure on already stretched household budgets. According to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the new prices will be applicable for the next 15 days starting from March 1, 2026.

Under the revised rates, the price of high-speed diesel has been increased by Rs. 5.16 per litre, while petrol has become more expensive by Rs. 8 per litre. These changes were made on the recommendation of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), which reviews international price trends and exchange rate movements before advising the government on domestic fuel prices.

Middle East Tensions Push Oil Markets Into Turmoil

The latest hike in fuel prices comes at a time when international oil markets are reacting strongly to renewed conflict in the Middle East. Over the weekend, the United States and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran, increasing fears of a wider regional confrontation.

Any escalation in the Gulf region tends to push oil prices higher because many of the world’s key energy supply routes and production facilities are located there. Traders worry about possible disruptions to shipping or damage to oil infrastructure, and this risk is quickly reflected in higher prices for crude and refined products on global markets.

For an energy-importing country like Pakistan, such spikes translate directly into higher import costs. When global prices rise, the government has limited room to keep local fuel rates unchanged without putting further strain on public finances.

New Petrol and Diesel Prices for the Next 15 Days

Under the revised notification, the price of high-speed diesel has now been fixed at Rs. 280.86 per litre, up from the previous level of Rs. 275.70 per litre. Diesel is widely used in transport, agriculture and industry, so any increase here often feeds into the cost of goods and services across the economy.

The price of petrol, also known as motor spirit, has been set at Rs. 266.17 per litre for the upcoming fortnight. This Rs. 8 per litre jump will hit private car owners, motorbike users and ride-hailing services, many of whom are already struggling with rising living costs.

According to the Petroleum Division, these revised prices will remain in place for 15 days and will be reviewed again at the next pricing cycle in line with international market conditions and the rupee–dollar exchange rate.

Impact on Households and the Wider Economy

For ordinary citizens, the increase in petrol and diesel prices means higher daily expenses. Commuters may have to spend more on travel, while public transport operators and goods carriers are likely to pass on the higher fuel costs to passengers and consumers. This can push up the prices of food items, construction materials and other essentials that depend on road transport.

For businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, higher fuel costs add to operating expenses at a time when many are already facing weak demand and tight cash flows. Industries that rely on diesel-powered generators due to load-shedding or unreliable power supply could also see their production costs rise further.

Economists warn that repeated fuel price hikes can add to inflation and reduce the purchasing power of households. However, authorities also argue that adjusting prices in line with global markets is necessary to avoid large losses for the government and state-owned companies. In the coming weeks, much will depend on how the situation in the Middle East develops and whether international oil prices stabilise or rise further.
