No Nationwide Internet Disruption Planned, Says PTA

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has rejected reports suggesting that internet services across the country will slow down or be disrupted on 15 January. In an official clarification, PTA officials stated that there is no truth to claims circulating on social media about nationwide connectivity issues on the specified date.

According to the authority, internet services across Pakistan remain stable and no interruptions have been reported on public networks. PTA stressed that there are no planned nationwide outages, bandwidth cuts or service restrictions linked to 15 January, and urged citizens to rely on verified information instead of unconfirmed online rumours.

Social Media Claims and Nayatel Maintenance Email

Concerns about a possible slowdown began after screenshots of an email from internet service provider Nayatel were widely shared on social media. The email informed customers about unavoidable maintenance activity on one of Pakistan’s submarine cables scheduled for 15 January 2026, around 2pm, with work expected to last up to eight hours.

The message from Nayatel cautioned that the maintenance window could cause internet slowness for some users, but it did not specify which submarine cable or route would be affected. As the email circulated online, many users interpreted it as a warning of widespread disruption to internet services across the country, prompting questions and speculation about the stability of Pakistan’s international connectivity.

PTA officials clarified that while individual operators may notify their subscribers of maintenance-related risks, such messages do not automatically indicate a nationwide problem. They emphasised that any potential impact is usually localised or limited to a portion of an operator’s traffic, rather than affecting the entire country.

Submarine Cable Maintenance Does Not Mean Nationwide Outage

In its statement, PTA underscored that routine maintenance on submarine cables is a normal part of managing international connectivity and does not typically result in a shutdown of internet services in Pakistan. Telecom operators and upstream providers usually have multiple routes and redundancy mechanisms in place to handle such activities.

The authority noted that major upstream providers, including Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) and Transworld, are operating normally with no service degradation observed on their networks. Traffic can often be rerouted through alternative cables or capacity, minimising any impact on end users even when one segment is temporarily under maintenance.

PTA also highlighted that Pakistan’s internet infrastructure is designed to cope with scheduled maintenance events. While users may occasionally experience mild slowdowns or latency during peak hours, these are usually short-lived and managed at the operator level without affecting overall nationwide connectivity.

PTA Assures Smooth Connectivity for Users

Responding directly to public concerns, PTA officials reassured users that no inconvenience is expected on 15 January and that consumers will continue to experience smooth and uninterrupted internet connectivity nationwide. They reiterated that neither PTA nor upstream providers have announced any planned service disruption for that day.

The authority advised citizens to remain cautious of unverified posts and forwarded messages on social media, especially when they relate to critical services such as internet, banking or telecommunications. It encouraged users to follow updates from official PTA channels and service providers for accurate information about network status or maintenance activities.

By issuing this clarification, PTA aims to prevent unnecessary panic and misinformation, while assuring both residential and business users that Pakistan’s internet infrastructure remains stable. For now, the regulator maintains that all major networks and international links are functioning normally and that no nationwide slowdown has been scheduled for 15 January.
