Punjab Government Proposes To Raise Legal Marriage Age For Girls

June 8, 2024Zayn0

The Punjabi government should consider raising the legal marriage age for girls from 16 to 18 years old, as suggested by the Cabinet Committee on Thursday. This suggestion would be examined and accepted by the entire cabinet, headed by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, according to the 24NewsHD TV channel.

Approval Process

Once the cabinet gives its assent, a bill containing the proposal will be brought before the Punjab Assembly. The Punjabi girls’ legal marriage age will rise to eighteen years old if the bill is approved by the Assembly.

Goal Of The Proposal

The goal of this action is to safeguard young girls’ rights and welfare while bringing Punjab’s legislation into compliance with international norms. In addition, the Cabinet Committee suggested giving the Walled City Authority over the whole state of Punjab.

Expanding the Walled City Authority’s Jurisdiction

As of right now, the Walled City Authority’s jurisdiction is restricted to the Walled City of Lahore, where it oversees managing the development and preservation of historic sites.

Benefits of the Expanded Authority

The Authority will be able to safeguard and oversee heritage sites across Punjab by extending its jurisdiction, which will guarantee the preservation and upkeep of the province’s historical and cultural resources.

Significance of the Proposed Changes

The government’s attempts to enhance social welfare and heritage conservation in Punjab have taken a significant turn with these plans. Raising the legal marriage age intends to discourage child marriage and advance females’ health and educational opportunities. In the meantime, the rich cultural legacy of Punjab will be better-preserved thanks to the Walled City Authority’s expanded authority, which will benefit both locals and tourists.

With these measures, the government’s attempts to improve social welfare and heritage conservation in Punjab have taken a major turn. An important first step toward defending girls’ rights and advancing their general well-being is raising the legal marriage age for females.

Conclusion

If these suggestions are carried out, the lives of young girls in Punjab will be improved, and the historical and cultural legacy of the area will be preserved, all of which will benefit the province’s general growth and advancement.
