Punjab Updates Food Price Monitoring
The Punjab government has developed a new mechanism to determine and monitor the prices of vegetables, fruits, greens, meat, milk and other essential food items. Special Assistant to the Punjab Chief Minister on Food Safety and Consumer Protection Salma Butt announced the development during a meeting of the Price Control Council, which she jointly chaired with Punjab Agriculture Minister Ashiq Hussain Kirmani.
Butt said providing essential food items at affordable prices remains a top priority of the provincial government. The latest measures are aimed at preventing fake inspection entries, improving the performance of price control magistrates and ensuring that officially notified prices are followed in markets, shops and grocery stores.
| Consumer Focus: The system is designed to make price inspections more traceable and reduce room for fake field reports. |
Qeemat App Gets Stricter Inspection Controls
The government has upgraded the Qeemat App by making live location tracking and selfie uploads mandatory for price control magistrates during inspections. These requirements are intended to confirm that field officers are physically present at the shop or grocery store they are inspecting.
Magistrates have also been prohibited from conducting inspections between 10pm and 5am. This restriction creates a defined inspection window and may reduce disputed entries made late at night. The meeting reviewed the performance of 1,635 price control magistrates across Punjab, including inspections, fines, arrests and sealing actions taken over violations.
| Measure | What Changed | Expected Impact |
| Price mechanism | New method for key food items | More consistent rate setting |
| Live location | Mandatory during inspections | Fewer fake inspection entries |
| Selfie upload | Required for shop checks | Proof of field presence |
| Night restriction | No inspections from 10pm to 5am | Clearer inspection discipline |
| Market checks | Naan, roti and chicken under watch | Faster action on overcharging |
Price Trends Reviewed by Officials
Officials said millions of inspections had been conducted from 2023 to August 2026. The review also noted fines worth tens of millions of rupees, thousands of arrests and the sealing of several shops over violations such as overcharging or failure to display official price lists.
Butt said strict checks on naan, roti and chicken prices were continuing, with immediate action being taken against overcharging. She added that tomato and potato prices had recorded a significant decline, while sugar, flour, cooking oil, poultry and pulses had remained stable over the past six months.
| Stable Items: Sugar, flour, cooking oil, poultry and pulses were described as stable over the past six months. |
Why Onion Prices Increased Slightly
The meeting was also informed that onion prices had increased slightly due to the off-season in Punjab. According to the official briefing, 64 percent of onion supply is currently coming from Balochistan. This supply pattern makes the market more sensitive to seasonal availability, transport costs and wholesale movement.
For consumers, the new system will matter only if official prices are updated clearly and enforced fairly. Digital tools can improve monitoring, but the real test will be whether markets display correct rate lists, inspections are transparent and overcharging complaints are handled quickly.
| Watch Point: Slight onion price pressure has been linked to the off-season and dependence on supply from Balochistan. |
