Punjab Makes E-Tag Mandatory for All Vehicles, Including Bikes

What Punjab Approved: E-Tags for Every Vehicle

The Punjab government has approved mandatory installation of electronic tags on all vehicles across the province, including motorcycles. Officials have also been directed to submit a comprehensive micro security plan within seven days, signalling that the policy is tied to wider law and order objectives rather than only vehicle administration.

E-tags are typically used to improve identification, tracking, and verification of vehicles. When linked with checkpoints and surveillance systems, they can help authorities identify stolen vehicles, track suspicious movement patterns, and strengthen enforcement against illegal activity.

Including motorcycles is a key detail because bikes are widely used in Punjab and are often involved in everyday commuting. Making e-tags mandatory for this segment suggests the government wants broader coverage and fewer gaps in the surveillance and verification system.

Law and Order Meeting: Wider Security Measures Announced

The decision was finalised during a high-level law and order meeting led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The meeting approved multiple measures aimed at improving surveillance, border security, and counterterrorism operations.

One major step is the establishment of a Punjab Cyber Crime Investigation Unit and the appointment of its head. A dedicated cell will also be created to handle cases involving women and girls affected by cybercrime. In addition, district-level online crime centres will be set up to improve response and coordination.

These steps show a focus on both physical security and digital threats. Cybercrime complaints have increased in recent years, and dedicated structures can help speed up investigations, improve victim support, and reduce delays caused by unclear responsibilities between departments.

Tighter Border Controls, Drone Restrictions and Surveillance Expansion

CM Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to strictly enforce a ban on movement through non-traditional provincial entry points. This is aimed at tightening border control and reducing unmonitored entry routes that can be used for illegal movement.

She also ordered stronger enforcement of drone restrictions across Punjab. The meeting approved installation of searchlights at provincial entry routes, expanded drone surveillance, and rooftop security monitoring at checkpoints. Authorities were also directed to take immediate steps to procure advanced drone defence systems.

Together, these measures point to a layered surveillance approach: controlling entry points, improving visibility at night, monitoring checkpoints more closely, and preparing for drone-related risks. If implemented effectively, this can strengthen detection and response during high-risk periods or security alerts.

Policing Operations, Crowd Control Capacity and Next Steps

Emphasising proactive policing, the chief minister ordered that combing operations against criminals and terrorists continue without interruption. She also instructed that the RMP Anti-Riots Force, established for crowd management, should receive advanced training and modern security equipment.

During the meeting, CM Maryam Nawaz praised religious scholars for their role in maintaining peace and asked for continued cooperation to preserve law and order. She also commended Provincial Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique and the Lahore Police for handling recent situations in Lahore and other parts of Punjab in a timely manner.

The next immediate milestone is the micro security plan due within seven days. After that, the key public-facing questions will be: when e-tag installation begins, what the cost and registration process look like for citizens, how enforcement will be phased, and how e-tags will integrate with checkpoints, surveillance tools, and law enforcement workflows.
