Selective Changes Approved for Next Academic Session

The Punjab government has approved selective changes to the school curriculum for the academic year 2026–27. According to an official announcement by the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board (PCTB), most existing textbooks will remain unchanged, with revisions focused on a limited number of Grade 9 subjects.

The decision is aimed at updating key areas of the curriculum without causing widespread disruption for schools, teachers and students. By targeting specific subjects, authorities hope to improve the quality and relevance of learning while keeping the transition manageable for education providers across the province.

PCTB has communicated the decision to all relevant stakeholders and has begun issuing instructions for printing and distribution so that updated textbooks are available before the new academic session begins.

What Is Changing in Grade 9 Computer Science and Entrepreneurship

Under the revised plan, the main changes will affect the Grade 9 Computer Science and Entrepreneurship (Tech) textbooks. PCTB has confirmed that a reviewed and updated Computer Science syllabus will be printed for Grade 9, reflecting the latest trends and requirements in digital skills.

At the same time, the number of pages in both the Computer Science and Entrepreneurship (Tech) textbooks for Grade 9 will be reduced. Officials say the objective is to remove outdated, overlapping or excessively theoretical content so that the books are more focused and easier for students to follow.

Schools have been advised that the core learning outcomes will remain intact, but the structure of chapters, examples and activities may be adjusted to improve clarity and classroom delivery. Teachers will be guided on how to cover the revised material within the academic year.

Focus on Modern Skills and Creative Thinking

Explaining the rationale behind the changes, PCTB officials said the goal is to help students build modern knowledge, creative thinking and a better understanding of today’s economic and technological environment. Computer Science is seen as a gateway subject for digital literacy, coding, online safety and problem-solving, all of which are critical for future careers.

Similarly, Entrepreneurship at the Grade 9 level is meant to introduce students to basic business concepts, innovation, financial awareness and the mindset required to start or manage small ventures. By updating these subjects, the government wants to ensure that the content reflects current realities rather than outdated examples and models.

Officials believe that a sharper, more practical approach to both subjects can make lessons more engaging and relevant, encouraging students to think beyond rote learning and connect classroom ideas with real-life situations.

Instructions for Schools, Publishers and Teachers

To support the transition, PCTB has issued instructions to update printing orders for the revised textbooks. Publishers have been directed to ensure that the new Grade 9 Computer Science and Entrepreneurship (Tech) books reflect the approved changes in content, length and layout.

Educational institutions have been asked to implement the new curriculum immediately once the revised books are delivered. School administrations are expected to brief teachers about the changes, adjust lesson plans where needed and ensure that students receive the correct editions before the start of classes.

Teachers may also receive supporting guidelines or orientation sessions to help them understand what has changed, which topics have been simplified and how to use the revised textbooks to strengthen students’ conceptual understanding.

Positive Reaction from Education Circles

Early reaction from education circles has generally been positive. Many teachers and education experts have long argued that textbooks need to be updated regularly to keep pace with technological and economic changes. They see the latest move as a step in the right direction, especially for subjects that are closely linked to the job market.

Commentators have also welcomed the focus on reducing unnecessary pages, noting that overly bulky books can be difficult for students to manage, particularly at lower secondary levels. A concise, better-structured textbook can make it easier for students to revise and for teachers to cover the syllabus within the available time.

Many stakeholders now hope that similar, carefully planned updates will gradually be extended to other grades and subjects. For parents and students, the key message is that the core curriculum remains stable while targeted changes are being introduced to improve quality and relevance for the 2026–27 academic year and beyond.
