Punjab Weighs Big Expansion of CM Laptop Scheme as Demand Surges

What’s the Latest Update on the CM Laptop Scheme

The Punjab government is considering expanding the Chief Minister’s Laptop Scheme after receiving strong demand from students. According to sources, two different expansion models are currently under review, and a final decision is expected after internal evaluation of budget and coverage targets.

So far, more than 35,000 students have already received laptops under the scheme. At the same time, the government has reportedly received more than 143,000 applications, which highlights how quickly demand can exceed planned allocations in education support programmes.

Alongside the expansion discussion, the Higher Education Department (HED) has extended the deadline for Laptop Scheme Phase 2 applications, giving students more time to apply through the official online process.

Two Expansion Models: 50% Increase vs 100% Increase

Sources say the first model proposes expanding the programme by 50%. Under this plan, the total cost could rise to around Rs. 40 billion, and roughly 165,000 students would receive laptops.

The second option is a larger expansion of 100%. If approved, the total cost could reach about Rs. 54 billion, and around 220,000 students would be provided laptops.

The key difference is coverage versus budget pressure. A 50% increase would still leave a gap between applications and awards if demand stays high, while a 100% expansion would cover many more students but requires significantly more funding and stronger procurement planning.

Current Budget Picture and Why Costs Matter

According to the reported figures, the scheme’s current total cost is Rs. 27 billion, while Rs. 15 billion was initially allocated for the first phase. This suggests the programme has already expanded beyond its early funding plan or has required additional financing to meet targets.

If costs move toward Rs. 40 billion or Rs. 54 billion, the government will need to balance the scheme against other education spending priorities, including scholarships, campus upgrades, teacher support, and student transport or stipends.

For students, the budget debate matters because it can affect the number of laptops available, the speed of distribution, and the quality/specifications of devices. Larger orders can sometimes reduce per-unit price through scale, but they also increase logistical complexity and delivery timelines.

What Students Should Do Now: Phase 2 Deadline and Application Rules

The Higher Education Department (HED) has extended the Phase 2 deadline, and students can now submit online applications until March 20. Applications will only be accepted through the online system, so students should avoid unofficial agents and rely on the official portal.

To reduce the risk of rejection or delays, applicants should complete their forms carefully, double-check personal details, and ensure that academic information matches their institution records. It also helps to apply early rather than waiting for the last day, since heavy traffic can slow down online systems near deadlines.

Students who have already applied should keep an eye on updates from their institutions and the department, because verification steps often happen through university or college records before final lists are issued.

What to Expect Next: Decision Timeline and Selection Impact

Punjab will make the final decision on whether to expand the scheme, and which model to adopt. The decision will likely depend on budget approval, procurement readiness, and the government’s target for how many eligible applicants it wants to cover in this cycle.

If the scheme expands, students can expect a larger pool of beneficiaries and potentially more phases of distribution. If the expansion is limited, competition for laptops may increase, making eligibility criteria and merit verification even more important.

The main takeaway for now is practical: apply before March 20 through the online system, keep your academic data accurate, and watch for official updates. The expansion discussion is a positive signal, but the final number of laptops will only be confirmed once the government approves the model.
