Rupee’s 76-Day Run in the Green

The Pakistani rupee (PKR) has extended its remarkable winning streak in the interbank market, closing stronger against the US dollar for the 76th consecutive trading day. On Friday, the local currency settled at around Rs280.02 against the greenback, gaining a couple of paisas during the session.

While the day-on-day change in the rupee’s value may look small, the length of the streak itself is notable. It signals a period of relative stability in the foreign exchange market compared to the sharp volatility seen in previous years. For businesses and households, a calmer exchange rate environment makes it easier to plan imports, pricing and financial commitments.

PKR Holds Firm Near 280 per US Dollar

According to interbank data, the rupee closed at 280.0621 against the dollar on 7 January 2026, 280.0518 on 8 January and 280.0235 on 9 January—showing a consistent but gradual strengthening trend. The cumulative gain over these three sessions comes to a little under three paisas.

Although the rupee is still trading close to the Rs280 mark, the fact that it has avoided large intraday swings and sustained pressure is itself a positive sign for exchange rate management. For importers, this means slightly better visibility on their cost structure, while exporters can factor in a more stable PKR when negotiating new orders.

Gains Against Major Global Currencies

The rupee’s performance was not limited to the US dollar. It also finished in the green against all major currencies tracked in the interbank market during the latest session.

Against the euro (EUR), the PKR strengthened from 327.1686 on 7 January to 326.1434 on 9 January, a net gain of about 0.87 rupees. Versus the British pound (GBP), it appreciated from 377.8038 to 376.0716, improving by roughly 0.43 rupees.

The rupee also posted gains against the Australian dollar (AUD), moving from 188.7199 to 187.0837 over the same period—a strengthening of around 0.60 rupees. Smaller but still positive moves were recorded against the Canadian dollar (CAD), Malaysian ringgit (MYR) and Chinese yuan (CNY).

In the Gulf currencies, the rupee again closed on a positive note. It firmed slightly against the UAE dirham (AED), moving from 76.2489 to 76.2384, and gained around one paisa versus the Saudi riyal (SAR), shifting from 74.6783 to 74.6709.

What’s Behind the Rupee’s Recent Stability?

Several factors typically contribute to periods of exchange rate stability. These can include improved foreign exchange reserves, better current account management, disciplined import demand and steady inflows from exports, remittances or external financing.

When markets sense that the central bank and government are aligned on keeping speculation in check and maintaining a realistic, market-aligned rate, sharp one-way moves in the currency often slow down. In such an environment, even small daily gains, like a few paisas against the dollar or other major currencies, can add up over time.

For now, the rupee’s slow but steady appreciation suggests that supply and demand in the interbank market are reasonably balanced, with no immediate signs of panic buying or forced selling of foreign currency.

What It Means for Businesses and the Public

For ordinary citizens, a stronger or more stable rupee can help ease pressure on imported fuel, food and consumer goods prices over time—although the impact is not always immediate or one-to-one. For businesses, especially those dependent on imported raw materials, machinery or inputs, the current trend reduces the risk of sudden cost spikes due to currency depreciation.

Exporters, on the other hand, must keep a close watch. While a very weak rupee can temporarily boost export earnings in local currency terms, it also raises the cost of imported inputs and can hurt competitiveness if volatility is high. A predictable and moderate exchange rate, like the one seen during this 76-day streak, allows exporters to focus more on quality, delivery and market expansion rather than constant currency risk.

If the rupee can maintain this period of calm and continue to post small, measured gains, it will support broader economic stability and help rebuild confidence among investors, traders and households alike.
