Assuring the public that internet and mobile service will not be interrupted on election day, Acting Minister of Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi urged people to use their democratic right to cast informed ballots.

Solangi emphasized the value of voting as a sign of dedication to the nation’s democratic process and patriotism in a statement released today.

He confirmed that there had been no directives from the administration to interfere with communication systems while voting is taking place.

“A free and transparent election depends on the ability to communicate and obtain information,” Solangi said, underscoring the government’s dedication to preserving democratic values.

Disabling The Internet, However, Has Negative Economic Effects.

Telecom businesses incur costs of Rs940 million for every day that the internet is unavailable, resulting in a loss of Rs329 million in taxes for the national exchequer.

The evaluation is predicated on the knowledge that last year, cellular services brought in approximately Rs572 billion for telecom operators.

According to a Pakistan Freelancers Association spokesman, the country’s internet was shut down in May 2023 amid political unrest. As a result, the IT freelance sector is losing about $2 million every day.

Aside from financial losses, software companies also suffer from a damaged reputation with their foreign customers, and thousands of ride-hailing and delivery service providers have their daily salaries withheld due to the nation’s 9.6% unemployment rate (in 2022-23).
