Additionally, he made note of the uneven distribution of toll plazas, particularly in Balochistan, which is home to about 42% of the nation’s road network yet only has one toll plaza. Similarly, there is only one toll plaza and 900 kilometres of roads in Gilgit-Baltistan. Plans for the upkeep and repair of the road infrastructure in these areas have been slowed down by this imbalance.

Higher Revenue Objectives 

The committee was informed that the efforts taken by the government to enhance the effectiveness of toll collection had yielded positive outcomes. The amount of toll revenue gathered from highways and motorways in the previous year was Rs. 60 billion, and it is anticipated to surpass Rs. 100 billion shortly.

Issues with the Automotive Industry 

The discussion also focused on Pakistan’s car fleet’s components, which raises some important issues in and of itself. Out of the 38 million cars in the nation, 70 per cent were motorbikes, and the remaining 2.7 million were huge vehicles, 70 per cent of which were allegedly older and less efficient.

Looking Forward 

To make toll collection more convenient and the nation’s road network more effective, the government is working to improve the utility of M-Tag and rationalize the uneven distribution of toll plazas. To achieve the advantages these projects, promise, however, a comprehensive strategy is required to address the obstacles presented by the heterogeneous transportation landscape.
