Punjab Announces Winter Break for Colleges

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has announced winter vacations for colleges across the province, offering long-awaited relief to students and staff in the middle of the cold season. The minister shared the notification through his official social media accounts, making it clear that the decision applies to public sector colleges throughout Punjab.

Under the new schedule, colleges will observe winter break from 23 December to 10 January. Classes will remain suspended during this period, allowing students and teachers to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel and manage their health better as temperatures drop. The move is meant to align academic calendars with weather conditions and reduce the impact of cold-related illnesses on learning.

Schools Already on Winter Vacations

The recent move for colleges comes soon after the provincial government confirmed winter vacations for schools. Earlier, Rana Sikandar Hayat had announced that schools in Punjab would go on winter break from 22 December until 10 January.

This means that, for the first time in this season, both schools and colleges across the province are on a similar winter schedule. For families with children in different classes and institutions, having aligned dates makes planning much easier. Parents can arrange travel, family events or study routines without dealing with separate break periods for school-going children and college students.

Health, Safety and Smog Concerns Behind the Decision

According to the education department, the decision to extend and synchronise winter vacations is closely linked to health and safety concerns. In many parts of Punjab, the winter months bring not only cold weather but also smog, fog and poor air quality, especially in major cities such as Lahore, Faisalabad and Gujranwala.

Cold winds, low temperatures and pollution can increase the risk of respiratory illnesses, flu and other seasonal infections, particularly among young children and elderly staff.
By announcing a longer break, the government hopes to reduce daily exposure to harsh weather conditions and roadside pollution, especially for students who travel early in the morning on motorcycles, vans or public transport. Officials have emphasised that protecting the health of students and teachers is a top priority, and winter vacations are one of the tools being used alongside other measures such as smog alerts and mask advisories.

What Students and Parents Should Do During the Break?

While the break is designed to give students time to rest and recover, education authorities and teachers are also encouraging families to use this period wisely. For college students, the winter holidays are a good opportunity to revise the syllabus, work on pending assignments and prepare for upcoming mid-term or final exams.

School students can revisit key subjects such as mathematics, English and science through light revision, educational videos or home-based practice. Parents are being advised to maintain a basic study routine at home, even if it is just one or two hours a day, so that children do not lose touch with their coursework.

At the same time, families should pay attention to health precautions: keeping warm, staying hydrated, avoiding unnecessary outdoor exposure in heavy smog and following doctor’s advice in case of flu-like symptoms. Balancing rest, study and safe indoor activities can help students return to school and college refreshed rather than completely out of rhythm.

Stay Updated Through Official Announcements

The education department has asked students, parents and teachers to follow official communication channels for any further updates about the academic calendar. Announcements about the reopening of institutions, rescheduled exams or extension of holidays, if needed, will typically be shared through the department’s website, verified social media accounts and formal notifications.

Parents are being warned not to rely on unverified messages or rumours circulating on social media or WhatsApp groups. Instead, they should cross-check any claim about date changes with official sources or their institution’s administration.

For now, the key message is clear: schools and colleges in Punjab will remain on winter break until 10 January, giving students and staff a safer window to get through the coldest part of the season. Once classes resume, institutions are expected to adjust lesson plans, test dates and co-curricular activities to make sure that learning momentum is restored without putting extra stress on students.
