Cordial Greeting and Historical Context

Xi Jinping, the president of China, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had a lengthy and detailed conversation today in Beijing. Since taking office in 2024, this was the Prime Minister’s first encounter with the Chinese President. Thank you to Premier Xi for the cordial greeting that he and his delegation received in China. He brought up the historic visit of President Xi Jinping to Pakistan in 2015, during which a new chapter in the bilateral relationship was officially opened with the formal operationalization of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Praise for Chinese Initiatives

The Prime Minister praised President Xi for his innovative Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and Global Development Initiative (GDI), and he emphasized that the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the BRI’s flagship project, has made a substantial socioeconomic development contribution to Pakistan.

Commitment to CPEC Development

The two leaders restated their agreement to see CPEC developed to a high standard and to finish large-scale ongoing projects on schedule. The two leaders reaffirmed their agreement to upgrade CPEC and advance its superior development in the project’s second phase.

Assurance of Safety and Security

The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to the superior development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and to cultivating mutual benefit between the two nations’ development plans via close collaboration. He emphasized that China’s nationals, projects, and institutions in Pakistan are safe and secure, and that Pakistan is fully committed to supporting them.

Alignment of Policies and Initiatives

President Xi was informed by the prime minister on Pakistan’s policies regarding industrial development, agricultural modernization, regional connectivity, economic reform and sustainable growth, and the pivotal role that CPEC has played in Pakistan’s development. He emphasized that China’s concept of “shared prosperity” is consistent with the government’s plan for socioeconomic growth that is centered on the needs of the people.

Discussion of Regional and International Issues

Along with discussing regional and international issues, the two leaders discussed South Asia, Afghanistan, and Palestine as well as the grave human rights situation in India’s illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The parties restated their long-standing backing for one another’s fundamental concerns.
