Technology & Gadgets | August 2026 | 3 min read
⚡ Quick Takeaways
⚡ From August 24, a YouTube view counts from the first frame — no minimum watch time required.
⚡ Applies to regular videos, Shorts and livestreams — unified counting across all formats.
⚡ Creators in YouTube Analytics will still see “Engaged views” separately — the real retention metric.
⚡ YPP monetisation thresholds double from Feb 2027: watch hours go from 4,000 to 8,000; Shorts views from 10m to 20m.
⚡ Existing YPP members are not affected by the higher thresholds — only new applicants from February 2027.
YouTube is making two significant changes simultaneously that point in opposite directions. Public view counts are becoming easier to accumulate — from August 24, any video that begins playing registers a view immediately. But getting monetised is becoming harder — the YouTube Partner Programme’s entry thresholds are doubling for new applicants from February 2027. For Pakistani creators building a YouTube career, the interaction between these two changes matters more than either one alone.

The View Counting Change — What It Means
From August 24, YouTube will count a view the moment a video starts playing — across regular videos, Shorts, and livestreams. The previous system for standard videos required an unofficial minimum watch duration (widely believed to be around 30 seconds) before a view registered publicly. That minimum disappears.
The practical effect: view counts on existing videos will not be retroactively adjusted, but going forward, a thumbnail click that results in a one-second watch will register as a view. High-click, low-retention videos will accumulate views faster than before. This aligns YouTube with TikTok and Instagram’s counting methodology.
| ℹ️ Engaged Views vs Public Views — What Creators Should Watch For viewers, nothing changes. For creators, public view counts will likely trend higher — which looks better on the surface but conveys less information about actual audience engagement. Advertisers and serious creators will increasingly rely on Engaged views (the Analytics metric) rather than public view counts when evaluating content performance. |
YPP Thresholds Double for New Applicants
| Requirement | Current Threshold | From Feb 1, 2027 |
| Subscribers | 1,000 | 1,000 (unchanged) |
| Watch hours (past 12 months) | 4,000 hours | 8,000 hours (+100%) |
| OR: Shorts views (90 days) | 10 million | 20 million (+100%) |
| Existing YPP members affected? | — | No — only new applicants |
| 🔴 Apply Before Feb 1, 2027 — Current 4,000-Hour Threshold Closes Doubling the watch hour requirement to 8,000 and the Shorts view requirement to 20 million is a significant barrier increase for new creators trying to monetise. For Pakistani creators — many of whom are in the 1,000-5,000 subscriber range and building toward monetisation — the February 2027 deadline represents a window. Creators who qualify under the current 4,000-hour threshold before February 1 retain their YPP status permanently under the existing terms. |
The Larger Picture — Views Up, Monetisation Down
The two changes together create a counterintuitive situation: YouTube is making it easier to show high view numbers while simultaneously making it harder to convert those views into income. For creators who have not yet reached the monetisation threshold, the first-frame view counting will make their video metrics look more competitive — but the bar to actually earn from those metrics is rising, not falling.
For established creators already in YPP, neither change directly affects earnings. Monetisation continues to be based on engagement metrics, not the public view count — so the inflated public numbers do not translate to inflated income.
Disclaimer: Changes are as announced by YouTube. View counting changes apply from August 24, 2026. YPP threshold changes apply to new applicants from February 1, 2027. Existing YPP members retain their status regardless of the new thresholds.
